A Day in LIC: PS1 and Casa Enrique

One of the best parts about summer is being outside, and my favorite seasonal activity is attending Moma PS1’s Warm Up dance party. Warm Up is held every Saturday in the summer and features experimental music and DJs. Guests can drink and mingle in the outdoor courtyard, and the price of admission also includes access to the modern art exhibit inside. The party gets better towards the end of the day, where people start getting a little more buzzed and a little more into the music, and the courtyard turns into a huge dance floor.

Moma PS1 is located in Long Island City, Queens, so I make it a point to try interesting restaurants in the area. My go-to has typically been Sripraphai in Woodside, but this time we decided to check out Casa Enrique, a Michelin rated Mexican restaurant a few minutes away. The restaurant has that casual, beachy resort look about it that’s common in Puerto Rico or the Caribbean. The style of cooking, however, is extremely homey and hearty, representative of Chef Cosme Aguilar’s Mexican family cooking. Some things as a result lean a little heavy, such as the pozole, a thick stew made from large white corn kernels that the two of us needed to share as a main, but the fried fish and pastor tacos were the right balance of filling but not overly so. Savory and hearty is Casa Enrique’s forte, which probably explains why the ceviche was so-so, but the decadent, condensed-milk saturated tres leches cake was to die for. The michelada will build up a good base for all that rich food to settle in, and for you to cap the night with a pleasant buzz.
