Secret Summer 2016

Secret Summer 2016 was a hot one. I’m not talking about the weather, which did get up there in the high 90s. I’m talking about Lucky Chops, a brass band whose sassy, high-energy performance was scorching. All six members played like they were having the time of their lives, and their positive vibe was infectious. The crowd went wild for the group’s spirited take on pop classics like Spice Girls’ “Say You’ll Be There”, and band member Leo P really put his back into it with his crazy booty shakes. Whoever said band camp is just for geeks hasn’t been to this jam session, because all the cool kids were dancing to the beat of a horn and saxophone. Not even a little rain could stop this party.

Lucky Chops wasn’t the only one killing it at The Foundry. People were looking fierce in their summery wreaths and boho-chic outfits, and the face-painting that they had done inside completed the look. Ballerinas were committed to the cause of looking lithe and graceful, despite the heat. The games at the ping pong tables were going on all night. Bespoke Solutions brought their A-game to the cocktail menu and kept the tailor-made drinks coming. Spirits like Finlandia, Old Forester Bourbon and Herradura were garnished with herbs from Farm. One‘s tricked out hydroponic urban farm. If cocktails aren’t your thing, there was also a Rekoderlig cider stand and a La Colombe ice coffee station out in the garden. Woodford Reserve had its own lounge, where you could engage in a serious whiskey and food pairing and taste all the subtle notes in their bourbon. Or you could keep it light and just drink a Churchill Downs, whatever floats your boat.

You shouldn’t drink on an empty stomach, so there were several food trucks like Eddie’s Pizza and Big D’s Grub Truck nearby that would help you out with that. We sprung for the line at La Pulperia, a Latin seafood restaurant that was manning a grill and cranking out tasty tacos and sandwiches, and the steak sandwich really hit the spot. Van Leeuwen was back and the demand for their ice cream was just as strong as last year. Nothing says summer like eating an ice cream cone outside.

Secret Summer knows how to throw a party. The secret is out now on this one, but these folks always have something cool up their sleeves…stay tuned for next year.
