You might describe a sushi omakase as luxurious, long and expensive, but rarely is it ever fun. At Shuko, sitting through 29 courses of the sushi kaiseki is the most fun you’ll ever have. With rap music blaring on the background, the friendly staff plying you with drinks, and the sushi chefs answering questions like, “what’s your guilty pleasure?”, there’s no way you won’t have a good time.

The non-sushi dishes arrived first, a succession of lightly marinated sashimi, tempuras, cooked seafood and beef. It was a pleasant prelude to the meal, with the soft shell crab with yuzu aioli making the strongest showing, but the real star was the sushi. Shuko’s sushi selection is distinctive in that it doesn’t rely so heavily on toro, yellowtail and uni to bedazzle. Chances are taken with more obscure varieties like an ocean trout from the Faroe Islands, which was a revelation. The superlatives go on and on for the sushi portion of the kaiseki. All good things must come to an end, but you can keep the party going by ordering additional pieces after the end of the meal. You made it this far, might as well go big or go home.
